Located in the Moscow region on a small and uniquely shaped plot, Soaring House by VFORM Studio is a sophisticated contemporary residence that transforms spatial limitations into an architectural advantage. The unusual geometry of the site became the central driver of the design, inspiring an innovative composition that carefully balances openness, light, and structural lightness.

Instead of forcing a conventional layout onto the site, VFORM Studio approached the project as a dialogue between architecture and context. The house was designed according to the surrounding views, patterns of sunlight exposure throughout the day, and a clear functional logic of spatial organization. The result is a modern home that appears to float above the landscape while maximizing both usable space and visual openness.

Through its refined material palette, dynamic structural strategy, and carefully orchestrated interior spaces, Soaring House becomes more than a residence—it is an architectural exploration of lightness, transparency, and spatial fluidity.

Architecture Shaped by an Unusual Site

The irregular shape of the plot posed one of the main design challenges for the architects. Limited space required a highly efficient spatial strategy that could expand the house vertically and visually without overwhelming the site.

VFORM Studio responded by developing a layered architectural composition. The ground floor was conceived as an open, transparent base that allows views to flow freely through the house and into the garden. Large glass surfaces dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, allowing the surrounding landscape to become part of the living experience.

At the same time, the architects used the building’s massing to optimize sunlight exposure across the plot. By carefully analyzing the site’s solar orientation, the house was positioned to maximize daylight in the living areas while maintaining comfortable shading conditions during the warmer months.

This thoughtful integration of architecture and environment ensures that the house remains visually light while responding intelligently to the constraints of the site.

A Floating Upper Volume

One of the most distinctive features of Soaring House is its elevated upper level. Rather than stacking the floors directly above each other, the architects offset and rotated the upper volume in relation to the ground floor.

This design strategy serves several important purposes. First, it allows more natural light to reach the northern part of the site, preventing the building from casting excessive shadow across the garden. Second, the rotation increases the usable interior space while maintaining a compact footprint on the plot.

The shifted volume also creates a sheltered terrace below, offering a protected outdoor living area that can be enjoyed throughout the year.

To reinforce the architectural concept of lightness, the structural columns supporting the upper level were constructed from stainless steel and integrated into the monolithic slab. This solution minimizes the visual presence of the structure, giving the impression that the upper floor is gently hovering above the landscape.

The upper level itself is constructed using timber and fibre-reinforced concrete, creating a refined contrast between natural warmth and technological precision.

Reflective Façade and Material Innovation

The façade design plays a crucial role in shaping the visual identity of the house. The ground floor is defined by expansive glazing combined with satin-finished stainless steel surfaces. These reflective materials help dissolve the building into its surroundings by mirroring the changing light conditions and garden environment.

Rather than presenting a solid architectural mass, the house interacts dynamically with its context. Sunlight reflects off the metallic surfaces, filling the garden with subtle glimmers of light and reinforcing the project’s theme of immateriality.

This reflective strategy also enhances the perception of openness, making the house appear lighter and more transparent than its actual structural form.

The contrast between the reflective ground floor and the more solid upper level further emphasizes the architectural composition. The base becomes almost invisible within the landscape, allowing the upper volume to visually float above it.

Interior Spaces that Extend the Architecture

Inside the house, the connection between exterior and interior is carefully maintained through spatial openness and material continuity. Open terraces and large sliding glass panels ensure that the living spaces remain visually connected to the garden at all times.

One of the most striking interior elements is located directly opposite the entrance on the ground floor: a dynamic mirror panel with a chrome effect. This installation visually extends the façade’s reflective concept into the interior environment.

The panel was created using advanced digital robotic fabrication techniques based on a detailed 3D model. Its surface is shaped by a continuously repeating sine wave, producing subtle distortions and reflections that shift as one moves through the space.

This sculptural installation reinforces the architectural idea of immateriality while introducing a contemporary artistic dimension to the interior.

A Double-Height Spatial Core

At the heart of the house lies a dramatic double-height stairwell that connects the two levels both physically and visually. This vertical space acts as the architectural centerpiece of the interior, bringing natural light deep into the home while creating a sense of openness and movement.

Within this atrium-like space stands a sculptural cantilevered staircase made from ultra-high-performance concrete. The staircase appears almost weightless despite its solid materiality, reflecting the overall theme of floating architecture that defines the house.

Its design is technically complex: the thickness of each step varies between 5 and 8 centimeters, creating an elegant tapered profile. The staircase was developed specifically for this project, demonstrating the architects’ commitment to integrating structural engineering with sculptural design.

Beyond its functional role, the staircase acts as an architectural artwork, emphasizing the interplay between structure, form, and light.

Warmth and Material Contrast in Private Spaces

While the public areas of the house emphasize transparency and reflective materials, the private spaces introduce a warmer and more intimate atmosphere.

In the master bedroom on the upper level, a large panel crafted from solid walnut creates a striking visual feature. The natural grain and deep color of the walnut provide a tactile contrast to the metallic and glass surfaces used elsewhere in the house.

This material choice echoes elements of the façade while adding warmth and richness to the interior environment. The result is a balanced interior design language that merges artistic expression with a deep understanding of material qualities.

The bedroom becomes a quiet retreat within the house, offering comfort and privacy while maintaining the architectural continuity established throughout the project.

Architecture of Lightness and Precision

Throughout Soaring House by VFORM Studio, the architects carefully explore the idea of architectural lightness. From the hovering upper volume to the reflective façade and the delicate structural elements, every component contributes to the sensation that the building is almost suspended within the landscape.

At the same time, the project demonstrates remarkable technical precision. Advanced fabrication techniques, innovative structural solutions, and carefully selected materials come together to create a house that is both visually striking and highly functional.

Rather than relying on decorative elements, the architecture itself becomes the source of expression. Structure, light, and materiality combine to shape an environment that feels contemporary, refined, and deeply connected to its surroundings.

A Contemporary House that Appears to Soar

Soaring House stands as a compelling example of how architecture can respond creatively to challenging site conditions. By transforming the constraints of a small, irregular plot into an opportunity for innovation, VFORM Studio created a residence that feels both dynamic and harmonious.

The floating upper level, reflective façade, sculptural staircase, and carefully crafted interior elements all contribute to a cohesive architectural narrative centered on lightness and spatial fluidity.

More than just a private home, Soaring House represents an exploration of contemporary architectural thinking—where technology, material experimentation, and spatial imagination come together to create a residence that truly lives up to its name.
