A Weekend House Embracing Nature and Privacy
Nestled in the private community of Manantiales, just 2 kilometers from the beach, Casa en la Laguna by A4estudio is a contemporary weekend home that commands stunning views of Uruguay’s Laguna Blanca. The 1,000 m² residence is sited on a 60×90 meter lot that rises over 9 meters along its depth, utilizing the natural slope to shape its multi-level composition.
The architectural challenge was twofold: first, to create an exterior environment that connects with nature while shielding views from neighboring homes; second, to develop a flexible interior program that allows seamless zoning between guest and family spaces.
Programmatic Clarity and Spatial Independence
Built into the upper portion of the sloped site, the home’s concrete base houses utility areas including a wine cellar, game room, machine room, and storage, while elegantly integrating with the natural terrain. Above this platform, the house unfolds in three distinct yet interconnected pavilions, unified by a transverse gallery.
-
South Pavilion: Contains the social core with living, dining, kitchen, and service areas.
-
North Pavilion: Hosts private guest bedrooms, ensuring comfort and discretion.
-
Central Pavilion: Elevated one level above the rest, it is dedicated entirely to the owners—a luxurious suite with an integrated gym.
Designing with the Landscape in Mind
A defining feature of the project is its expansive pool, positioned to mirror the scale and geometry of the pavilions. Acting as the central element of the outdoor space, it connects the wings while enhancing privacy and maximizing views towards the lower part of the terrain. The arrangement creates an open, breezy courtyard that is both protected from coastal winds and visually open to the surrounding landscape.
The material palette—raw concrete, black aluminum, glass, and wood—reinforces the minimalist yet warm atmosphere of the house, aligning with A4estudio’s philosophy of context-driven design.
