The Golf House by Studio 15b – A Modern Retirement Home in Brisbane

  • Project: The Golf House
  • Architect: Studio 15B
  • Location: Australia, Brisbane
  • Year: 2016

Studio 15b has completed The Golf House, a contemporary single-level residence in Brisbane, Australia. Designed for a retired couple, the home balances comfort, accessibility, and elegance while maximizing its spectacular outlook across a lush, tree-lined golf course.

A Home Designed for Longevity

The clients envisioned a user-friendly home where they could age comfortably, without the barriers of internal stairs. Studio 15b responded with a single-level design that seamlessly integrates private and public zones.

  • Private wing: Bedrooms and bathrooms.

  • Public wing: Open-plan kitchen, dining, and living areas.

At the heart of the design, the entry sequence frames a view directly through the home’s central axis—over the pool and outward to the golf course—establishing a visual connection to the landscape from the very first step inside.

Material Palette – Timber, Stone, and Light

The Golf House is defined by its natural materials and light-filled spaces:

  • Spotted gum polished timber floors extend from the interiors to the pool deck, reinforcing continuity.

  • A stone-clad blade wall runs from outside to inside, anchoring the entry and emphasizing solidity.

  • Thick timber veneer reveals frame openings, highlighting craftsmanship.

  • High-level glazing ensures abundant natural light throughout.

At night, an oversized lighting feature suspended in the double-height entry becomes a moon-like focal point, adding a touch of drama to the serene interior.

Framing the Golf Course Outlook

The architects designed the home to celebrate its golf course location. The open living areas extend seamlessly toward the pool deck, blurring boundaries between indoors and outdoors. The pool itself becomes part of the central axis, directing views toward the treed horizon beyond.

A House for Family and Guests

Although designed for two, the Golf House also accommodates the clients’ large extended family, who visit from Brisbane and abroad. Its open-plan layout and welcoming entry sequence make it equally suited for intimate living and social gatherings.
