A Fusion of Japanese Minimalism and Korean Heritage

Nestled in the historic Seongbuk-dong district of Seoul, SBD25 stands as a testament to the seamless integration of minimalist Japanese architecture with traditional Korean elements. Designed by Satoshi Kurosaki of APOLLO Architects & Associates, this private residence was commissioned by a client specializing in Scandinavian vintage furniture, seeking a home that would serve both as a personal sanctuary and a showcase for his collection.

The site’s constraints—a trapezoidal, sloping plot of approximately 372 square meters surrounded by narrow alleyways—presented unique challenges. To maximize space within the 30% building-to-land ratio and 60% floor area ratio, the architects excavated a full basement level, resulting in a total floor area of 453.75 square meters across three levels.

Courtyard Living: The Madang Concept Reimagined

Central to SBD25’s design is the reinterpretation of the traditional Korean madang, or courtyard. The residence features four distinct gardens: entrance, approach, main, and roof. These green spaces not only provide natural light and ventilation but also create a serene microcosm within the urban environment, fostering a strong connection between indoor and outdoor spaces.

The strategic placement of these courtyards ensures that each room offers a unique view, enhancing the living experience and bringing tranquility to the daily lives of the residents.

Material Palette: Concrete Meets Warmth

The home’s exterior is characterized by exposed reinforced concrete, offering a stark yet elegant façade that contrasts with the warmth of the interior materials. Inside, the use of teak flooring, border tiles, and acrylic emulsion paint creates a harmonious blend of textures and tones. This neutral palette serves as an ideal backdrop for the client’s collection of Scandinavian furniture by designers such as Arne Jacobsen and Poul Kjærholm.

The minimalist interior design emphasizes functionality and adaptability, allowing the space to evolve with the changing needs of its inhabitants.

Architectural Significance and Legacy

As APOLLO Architects & Associates’ inaugural project in South Korea, SBD25 represents a significant milestone in the firm’s portfolio. The residence not only fulfills the client’s vision of a home that marries art, design, and architecture but also contributes to the architectural landscape of Seongbuk-dong, an area known for its blend of historical and contemporary structures .

By thoughtfully integrating traditional Korean elements with modern design principles, SBD25 sets a precedent for future residential projects that seek to honor cultural heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics.
