- Project: Claudios House
- Architect: Arquitetura Nacional
- Location: Brazil, Eldorado Do Sul
- Year: 2022
- Area: 500 m2
Arquitetura Nacional designed the Claudios House in Eldorado do Sul, Brazil, a striking 5,381 sq ft (500 m²) two-story residence that combines privacy, modern structure, and panoramic views. Built for a young couple with a child, the project balances tranquility for daily living with open, expansive spaces for entertaining.
Reversing the Layout for Better Views
The site is located in a gated community, bordering both an ecological reserve and a river. While the vegetation initially blocked views of Porto Alegre’s skyline, the architects discovered that from 2.5 meters above ground level, the view opened completely.
This led to an inverted program:
-
Ground floor: Private areas, including five suites and service rooms, sheltered with concrete structure and wooden cladding.
-
Upper floor: Social and entertaining spaces—living, dining, gourmet kitchen with barbecue, office, and lounge—organized in an open plan with wide connections to outdoor terraces.
This reversal maximizes the connection between daily living and the surrounding landscape.
Structure and Materiality
The structural solution is one of the highlights:
-
Two blue-painted metal trusses span the second floor, creating a 7-meter cantilever that shades the garage. The steel structure was assembled in just five days.
-
Ground floor: Robust concrete walls clad in wooden panels, adding privacy and texture.
-
Upper floor: Profilit glass panels on the east façade introduce transparency and light, while the west façade incorporates drywall with minimalist patterned hydraulic tiles, balancing solidity and detail.
The combination results in a house that is both visually grounded and elevated, with a refined material dialogue.
Landscape and Outdoor Features
The landscaping emphasizes native Brazilian species, arranged in an organic, informal composition that harmonizes with the reserve beyond.
Additional outdoor features include:
-
A movable pool deck, which can cover the pool entirely to expand the garden or create an event terrace.
-
Outdoor terraces on the upper floor, connected seamlessly with the social spaces.
This integration of flexibility and nature ensures the residence adapts to both quiet family living and large gatherings.
Contemporary Living in Eldorado do Sul
The Claudios House is not just a modern dwelling but also a structural and spatial statement. By flipping the traditional house program, Arquitetura Nacional gave priority to views, light, and social living, while ensuring privacy and intimacy remain intact on the ground level.
