In Almaty, Kazakhstan, Akka Interiors Studio, led by Aizhana Kunayeva and Aidana Koshumbayeva, has designed a spacious family apartment that reflects cultural heritage, modern functionality, and a deep connection to nature. Created for a young, energetic woman passionate about travel and rooted in her homeland, the apartment blends individual character with a cohesive and tranquil atmosphere.
Merging Two Homes Into One
The project began with the bold move of combining two separate apartments into a single expansive residence. Surrounded by windows, the new layout floods every room with natural light, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. This spatial flexibility allows the design to adapt to the evolving needs of the family, prioritizing comfort and practicality without sacrificing elegance.
The Heart of the Home
At the core of the apartment are the kitchen and living room, designed as distinct yet interconnected spaces.
-
Kitchen: Instead of a traditional dining table, a sociable bar counter anchors the space, encouraging casual gatherings and family interaction.
-
Living Room: A large corner sofa, soft armchairs, and a stylish bio fireplace establish a cozy ambiance. Expansive windows frame breathtaking views of the Almaty mountains, while sleek glass cabinets and a concealed TV behind sliding panels maintain a clean, modern aesthetic.
Private Spaces with Character
The master bedroom is envisioned as a serene retreat, complete with a large dressing room, private bathroom, and a quiet work nook. Its generous windows ensure an abundance of natural light and uninterrupted mountain views.
Each teenager’s bedroom reflects individual personality:
-
The boy’s room embraces a structured, masculine style.
-
The girls’ rooms feature softer, feminine aesthetics.
Despite their differences, all bedrooms share functional design elements, such as private dressing rooms, ensuring both individuality and consistency within the overall scheme.
Functionality and Family Life
With four bathrooms and a dedicated laundry/utility room, the apartment is designed for efficiency and daily family life. Storage and circulation are carefully planned, supporting both comfort and elegance.
A Philosophy of Harmony
For Kunayeva and Koshumbayeva, the goal was not to overwhelm the space with decor, but to create a calm and harmonious home. Drawing inspiration from nature and the surrounding environment, the apartment becomes a balanced sanctuary—simultaneously modern, welcoming, and deeply connected to place.
The Family Apartment in Almaty by Akka Interiors Studio exemplifies how thoughtful interior design can merge cultural identity, natural inspiration, and contemporary living. Through smart spatial planning, abundant natural light, and a balance of individuality and unity, the project provides a refined yet warm home that adapts to the rhythms of family life.
