Context and Cultural Setting

The Klenovy Boulevard Station, designed by Osetskaya Salov, is located near the Kolomenskoye Museum-Reserve in Moscow, a site celebrated for its untouched landscapes and iconic Russian architecture. The museum complex, with its wooden churches and the grand Palace of Tsar Aleksey Mikhailovich, provided rich cultural references for the project. The design draws upon this historical setting, translating its forms into a contemporary architectural language.

Above-Ground Pavilion

The entrance pavilion is a striking blend of modernity and tradition. Its soft, domed silhouettes reinterpret the architectural motifs of Kolomenskoye, while embossed metal panels reference the Dyakovo culture of reticulated ceramics, a tradition rooted in the area. The dotted, illuminated façade creates a sense of lightness, transitioning seamlessly into the underground lobby’s ceiling finish.

By day, the pavilion appears refined and understated, while at night, perimeter roof lighting transforms the building into a glowing beacon of modern infrastructure. The layered lighting design inside the pavilion uses uplighting to accentuate wall textures, a large lightbox across the entrance, and mirrored ceiling panels that reflect daylight and artificial light for a dynamic visual effect.

Interior Architecture

Inside, the station adopts a monochrome palette of marble, granite, and aluminum, emphasizing both purity and elegance. The design reinterprets the traditional Russian dome through the vaulted ceiling above the platforms. Cleverly, only half of the dome is physically constructed—the other half appears through mirrored wall panels, creating a complete silhouette through reflection.

This play between tangible and virtual elements reinforces the symbolic and spiritual qualities of Russian architectural heritage while framing the platform spaces in a calm, monumental atmosphere.

Materials and Finishes

  • Walls and arches: white Russian marble and aluminum paneling

  • Floors and lower walls: black and gray Russian granite

  • Columns and pylons: black aluminum and mirrored panels

  • Ceilings: white aluminum dome panels with hidden lighting

The material palette enhances a sense of clarity, texture purity, and timelessness, while also ensuring durability for heavy daily passenger use.

A Dialogue Between Past and Present

The Klenovy Boulevard Station is not just a functional transport hub—it is a contemporary cultural landmark. By weaving together references from Kolomenskoye’s wooden and stone monuments, the Dyakovo ceramic tradition, and the iconic silhouette of the Russian dome, Osetskaya Salov created an infrastructure project that embodies both local identity and forward-looking design.

Osetskaya.Salov is a Moscow-based architectural firm founded in 2013 by architects Tatiana Osetskaya and Alexander Salov. The studio works on a wide range of creative tasks: from urban planning and public architecture to unique residential buildings, interiors, and designer / art objects. Their design philosophy emphasizes coherent, individual solutions guided by the authors’ vision. They view architecture as a spiritual practice, believing that spaces and forms can engage deeply with human emotion, behavior, and experience. Each project is seen as an organism: exterior, interior, and details are interlinked to form a complete, integrated image. The studio is especially interested in how architecture interacts with people — not just as static structures, but as agents of mood, memory, and dialogue — creating vivid and memorable spatial experiences.
