The Eichler Great Room by Klopf Architecture is a thoughtful renovation of a classic mid-century home located in Sunnyvale, California. Completed in 2020, this transformation brings openness, light, and a renewed sense of function to a previously disjointed layout, preserving the spirit of the original Eichler while adapting it for modern living.
Creating Space, Light, and Flow
The homeowners, frustrated by cramped spaces and an awkward entry directly into the kitchen wall, enlisted Klopf Architecture to reimagine their beloved Eichler home. The result is a balanced layout that moves all bedroom functions under the flat 8-foot ceiling, while the expansive great room sits beneath a soaring gable roof—an architectural shift that enhances volume, flow, and light.
The redesign includes a repositioned kitchen in the corner of the great room, allowing for a clean, symmetrical layout ideal for modern family life and entertaining. A narrow band of skylights and a smaller, but still open atrium flood the interiors with daylight, making lush greenery a daily presence.
Function-Driven Upgrades and Additions
One of the most impactful changes was the conversion of a small front bedroom into a laundry room, powder room, and hallway that connects to a new addition. This addition houses a flexible family room/home office, designed to double as a guest bedroom—a solution that reflects the evolving needs of today’s households.
Despite the expansion, the street-facing facade of the home retains its original charm. The seamless integration of the addition ensures that the transformation appears timeless and cohesive—a hallmark of Klopf Architecture’s sensitivity to mid-century aesthetics.
A Tailored Response to Modern Living
This renovation isn’t just about beauty—it’s about practicality. The new layout resolves spatial inefficiencies, enhances indoor-outdoor flow, and supports the growing need for dedicated work-from-home space. It’s a functional evolution of a mid-century classic, redefined for today’s lifestyles.
