A Countryside Refuge in Harmony with Nature

Designed by In House Architecture and Design, the Boomerang House in São Roque, Brazil, is a serene countryside retreat that redefines contemporary rural living. Nestled on a steep slope with panoramic views of a golf course, the 510-square-meter residence exemplifies the studio’s commitment to sustainability, comfort, and seamless integration with the natural landscape.

The home’s distinctive boomerang-shaped layout gives it its name—an elegant architectural gesture that follows the contours of the terrain while minimizing earth movement and environmental disruption. The result is a tranquil family sanctuary where architecture, topography, and nature exist in perfect balance.

Design Concept: Minimal Impact, Maximum Connection

From the outset, the design sought to harmonize with the land. The structure’s discreet façade blends into the slope, ensuring visual and acoustic privacy without dominating the landscape.
The curved plan creates two distinct wings—one housing the private suites and another for the social areas—connected through an open central axis that draws in natural light and frames views of the surrounding countryside.

Every interior space maintains direct visual contact with the outdoors, allowing residents to enjoy the constant presence of nature. The living room, dining area, kitchen, and deck with barbecue and pool form a fluid continuum—ideal for gatherings and peaceful daily life.

Architecture Rooted in Sustainability

Sustainability was a guiding principle throughout the design process. In House implemented a suite of passive and active strategies to ensure energy efficiency and environmental responsibility:

  • Photovoltaic panels and solar water heating provide renewable energy.

  • Rainwater harvesting and septic treatment systems reduce water consumption and environmental footprint.

  • Reforestation wood was used in structural and finish applications, reinforcing ecological balance.

  • Cross ventilation and generous openings ensure thermal comfort without air conditioning.

  • Natural light floods all living spaces, enhancing well-being and reducing energy use.

These measures make Boomerang House a model for low-impact, self-sufficient architecture in Brazil’s rural context.

Materiality: Warmth, Texture, and Timelessness

Material selection reflects the home’s blend of rustic simplicity and refined craftsmanship.

  • Exposed brick façades convey warmth and permanence, integrating naturally with the landscape.

  • Wooden brise-soleils provide shade and privacy while animating the interiors with shifting light patterns.

  • Burnished cement floors, laid with handcrafted tiles, give the home a tactile, artisanal character.

  • Natural tones and textures create a calming visual rhythm that complements the lush surroundings.

The combination of traditional materials and contemporary detailing gives the house both longevity and intimacy, a timeless quality essential to countryside living.

Life in Balance

Completed in 2023, the Boomerang House embodies the dream of a peaceful rural lifestyle for its owners—a couple seeking respite from city life without sacrificing modern comfort. The thoughtful spatial organization also allows them to work remotely, merging professional and personal life in an atmosphere of calm productivity.

“Every decision was guided by the desire to create a home that embraces nature while remaining functional and sustainable,” explain architects Andréa Bugarib and Betina Barcellos.

By honoring the land, materials, and local climate, In House has created a home that not only adapts to its environment but becomes a natural extension of it.
