Artery Residence by Hufft Projects
Kansas City is the home of the Artery Residence designed by the Missouri firmΒ Hufft Projects.Β This two story contemporary abode boasts almost 11,000 square feet of living spaces, providing a family of established contemporary art collectors with plenty of space for their beloved pieces of art. In fact, there is an entire subterranean gallery dedicated to it.
The entire interior design of the Artery Residence revolves around the artwork which is focused by beams of sunlight through the many glazed surfaces on the exterior.
When an art collector and his wife asked us to design and build them a new home, we used their extensive collection as the genesis of the residence. Artwork fills the lower level. This sub-grade gallery is the conceptual βheartβ of the home. The art flows from the main gallery into the circulation spaces of the other levels, spilling out into the hallways and vertical atriums. These βarteriesβ give the residence its name.
The main level is clad in limestone and contains the living spaces β the living room, kitchen, dining room, and his and her offices. Five upper level bedrooms β for the couple, their two children, and two lucky guests β cantilever dramatically. They take the form of cedar-wrapped boxes with expansive wood windows screened by aluminum louvers.
The art collection extends into the landscape. The lawn features a sculpture park, with grass pavers, long terraces and gentle landscape stairs. A tension edge swimming pool is wrapped by the main house, walls around it softened by climbing vines.
Our design focuses on creating moments, places to pause and experience specific pieces of art. The Artery Residence is both a gallery and a piece of art in itself.
