A Dialogue Between Architecture and Nature

The Lava House in San Antonio, Peru, by architect Martín Dulanto Sangalli, is an exemplary work of sustainable architecture that honors its environment. Designed with absolute respect for the terrain, the house embraces the natural topography of terraced land, mature trees, and massive stones, transforming them into integral parts of both architecture and landscape design. The result is a home that is warm, welcoming, and seamlessly embedded in its natural context.

Respecting the Terrain

Rather than altering the land, Lava House adapts to existing terraces and stone formations, anchoring its volumes while preserving every tree on the site. This sensitivity to nature defines the character of the residence. Instead of dominating the landscape, the house yields to it, allowing greenery and stone to take center stage. The architecture acts as a backdrop that enhances the beauty of the site.

Program and Layout

The house is organized across three levels, each with a distinct purpose:

  • Ground Floor (Entrance): Parking at street level.

  • First Level (Social Zone): A pool, terrace, outdoor grill, and garden establish the heart of the home. A striking white block with arched openings on three sides encloses the living and dining areas, framing views and connecting with the outdoors. Hidden passages discreetly link to the service areas.

  • Second Level (Private Zone): The bedroom level takes advantage of the panoramic views of San Antonio’s dramatic landscape. The layout includes a master suite with bathroom and walk-in closet, plus two additional bedrooms with private bathrooms and closets.

Architectural Expression

The design combines modern geometry with organic integration. The bold white block with arches creates a monumental yet inviting social space, softened by the surrounding greenery and water. The spiral staircase connecting the levels adds sculptural dynamism, while the panoramic windows frame sweeping views of the Peruvian coastline.

A Model of Sensitive Sustainability

Lava House exemplifies eco-conscious design by preserving the site’s ecological richness. Its success lies in relinquishing architectural protagonism and instead highlighting nature itself. By integrating trees, stones, and terraces into the design, the project achieves sustainable luxury—a modern home where the landscape is the true protagonist.
