A Rationalist Approach to Modern Living

Located in Canning, Argentina, the Bombai House by TIM Arquitectos is a striking example of rationalist architecture, where concrete becomes both structure and sculptural expression. Completed in 2022, the 1,722-square-foot single-story residence highlights sophisticated geometries, cantilevered partitions, and fluid connections between interior and exterior spaces.

Geometry and the Façade

The façade is defined by its bold cantilever elements, which create a play of light, shadow, and depth across the building envelope. This visual dichotomy allows the house to both expand into and define its surroundings. The entrance sequence begins with a reflective water mirror and a dramatic exposed concrete partition, guiding visitors toward a recessed entrance door framed with precision.

Interior Layout and Social Core

The program unfolds entirely on one level, with a strong emphasis on social interaction and openness.

  • A spacious integrated living area combines the living room, dining room, and kitchen.

  • This social hub extends seamlessly to a gallery with a grill, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor living.

  • The private wing includes two bedrooms with bathrooms, along with a flexible third room that can serve as a study or guest suite, with direct street access if required.

Light and Atmosphere

Natural light is central to the house’s identity. Large glazed surfaces and strategically placed windows ensure cross ventilation and abundant daylight. A distinctive architectural feature, the plinth lighting embedded in the floor, diffuses sunlight evenly throughout the interiors, producing a soft, natural illumination that enhances spatial clarity and ambiance.

Material Honesty and Minimalism

Concrete dominates both structure and expression, executed with clarity and precision to emphasize the home’s geometric character. The restrained palette—anchored by exposed concrete and glass—underscores minimalism and rationalist purity, while allowing the architectural details and structural gestures to take center stage.

The Bombai House is a testament to TIM Arquitectos’ mastery of concrete and rationalist design principles. With its cantilevered façades, seamless integration of social and private spaces, and innovative plinth lighting, the residence embodies a contemporary architectural vision that balances boldness with simplicity.
