Ukrainian Voice in Global Design: A Conversation with Olena Shabanova, Founder of Lena and Lily Interiors

When we think of design as both cultural expression and emotional storytelling, few voices embody this balance as gracefully as Olena Shabanova. With over a decade of international experience and a growing portfolio across Europe and the United States, Olena blends aesthetic sophistication with personal authenticity. As the founder of Lena and Lily LLC in Florida and Shalena Design Studio in Ukraine, her interiors reflect a careful dialogue between function, personality, and artistic depth.

This year, she joined the jury of the ABCarnival International Design Award — a recognition that not only honored her expertise but also reaffirmed the global relevance of Ukrainian design. In this exclusive interview, we speak with Olena about the criteria that guide her evaluation, how being a juror reshaped her design lens, and why she sees her role as both designer and cultural ambassador.

On Becoming a Jury Member: “It Was a Surprise, and a Responsibility”

– How did you become part of the ABCarnival jury? What did this recognition mean to you?

Honestly, I initially registered as a participant — not expecting anything more. So it was a true surprise and a joy when I was invited to be part of the jury! For me, it was a huge honor — a sign that my work and experience were being recognized and trusted at an international level. Being a juror is not only a responsibility, but also a chance to join a deeper professional conversation.

Defining Good Design: Individuality, Harmony, and Emotion

– What are the most important criteria you consider when evaluating other designers’ work?

Individuality comes first. I look for a unique design voice — not a copy of someone else’s ideas. Then, of course, I consider functionality, aesthetics, and how harmoniously everything is integrated. If a project moves you, if it sparks emotion — that’s a powerful sign.

– Do you discover new ideas or techniques during these competitions that you later bring into your own work?

Absolutely. Every competition offers a cross-section of what’s happening in global design right now. You see how designers in different countries think, what materials or philosophies they explore. It’s incredibly inspiring and often pushes me to experiment in my own practice.

Shifting Perspective: From Designer to Critic

– Has being a juror changed how you view design in general?

Yes — it gives you a new lens. As a judge, you see projects not just through the eyes of the creator, but from the perspective of the user, the viewer, even the critic. I started valuing honesty more — when a designer builds from a genuine idea rather than chasing visual effects. It’s an enriching experience that deepens how I approach my own creative process.

On Global Stages and Ukrainian Identity

– What advice would you give to Ukrainian designers aiming to enter international competitions?

Don’t be afraid. Ukrainian design already has a strong voice, and we have everything we need to stand alongside global peers. Show your individuality. Don’t copy or try to ‘guess the trend.’ The world appreciates honesty and originality — and that’s what opens doors.

– What, in your view, is the unique strength of Ukrainian design today?

Its boldness and sincerity. We aren’t afraid to mix tradition with modernity or to explore new forms. Our design is emotional, alive — it carries the spirit and story of our people. That authenticity is what makes Ukrainian work stand out internationally.

– Have perceptions of Ukrainian design changed abroad in recent years?

Very much so. Before, we were seen as a ‘young school.’ Now, there’s clear respect. We’ve proven that we can work to world-class standards while staying true to who we are. Ukrainian design is now recognized, visible, and in demand — and that’s a major step forward.

Community, Culture, and Design as a Form of Representation

– You’re a member of the Ukrainian Union of Designers. How does that community support designers today?

It plays a crucial role — both professionally and emotionally. We share knowledge, resources, even international opportunities. In challenging times, just knowing you’re not alone — that you have a community — is incredibly valuable.

– Do you see yourself as a cultural ambassador through your international work?

Absolutely. Whenever I work abroad, I feel I represent not just myself, but Ukraine. I want to show that our design is modern, creative, and deeply professional. Sometimes I include subtle details or accents that nod to Ukrainian culture — always respectfully. It’s my way of honoring where I come from.

– How do you stay connected to your Ukrainian roots while working across borders?

It’s an internal compass. Even when I design for other cultures, I bring with me the sense of proportion, material respect, and harmony I learned in Ukraine. That foundation never leaves me — and it shapes everything I create.

Conclusion: Design with Meaning, Identity with Purpose

Olena Shabanova’s work speaks of quiet elegance, cultural awareness, and intentional detail — but it also speaks of something deeper: the ability of design to carry identity across borders. As she continues to grow her practice in Florida and beyond, she does so with the authenticity of a Ukrainian designer who doesn’t just follow trends — she contributes to them.
