A Hidden Architectural Gem in the Pacific Northwest
Conceived as a modern stone sanctuary tucked into a rocky site, The Pierre—named after the French word for stone—is a striking private residence by acclaimed Seattle-based studio Olson Kundig. Located on San Juan Island, this 2,500-square-meter home disappears into its surroundings, showcasing the firm’s mastery in creating site-responsive, materially rich architecture.
The design embraces the rugged landscape, utilizing native rock formations, a green roof, and natural foliage to merge the structure with the earth. From several angles, the home seems to emerge organically from the stone, becoming a near-invisible part of the terrain.
Site Carving and Material Innovation
To achieve this embedded effect, large portions of the rock outcropping were carefully excavated using a combination of dynamite, hydraulic chippers, and fine hand tools. The excavation process itself became a design feature: tool marks were intentionally preserved on interior stone walls, honoring the raw nature of the work. Recycled stone from the site was crushed and incorporated into the concrete floors, emphasizing sustainability and material continuity.
Thoughtful Spatial Design and Natural Integration
With the exception of the guest suite, the house unfolds across a single main level. The open floor plan features a combined kitchen, dining, and living area, seamlessly connected to an expansive outdoor terrace via a monumental pivoting steel-and-glass door.
Throughout the home, natural rock formations penetrate the interior, creating sculptural moments within the architecture. Interior and exterior fireplaces are carved directly from the existing stone. The master bathroom’s sink flows through three natural stone basins, and a powder room and entry sequence are fully carved into the rock face.
An Architectural Dialogue with Earth
Olson Kundig’s design for The Pierre exemplifies how architecture can coexist with, rather than dominate, the landscape. It’s a model for contemporary design that respects context and celebrates the raw beauty of natural materials. The result is a serene and resilient home that feels timeless, deeply rooted in its Pacific Northwest setting.
