In the sunlit city of Kunming, known for its mild climate and scenic landscapes, WJ Studio reimagines the modern home with their latest project, the Greentown Cloud Mansion Model Room. This minimalist design draws from the region’s natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle, emphasizing simplicity, light, and connection to the surrounding environment. Through a thoughtful blend of natural materials, bold colors, and custom furnishings, the space transcends its role as a model home, becoming a serene and functional retreat that redefines the concept of contemporary living.

Context and Concept

Kunming, often referred to as the “Spring City,” is surrounded by mountains and faces the tranquil Dianchi Lake. This idyllic setting inspired WJ Studio to craft a design that harmonizes with its environment, emphasizing natural light, open spaces, and a sense of calm. The project’s guiding philosophy is to rediscover the core of everyday life, creating a home that fosters both individual reflection and communal connection. The result is a versatile space that adapts to various lifestyles while maintaining a deep connection to nature.

Art and Relaxation

At the heart of the design is a celebration of light and texture. Panoramic windows allow sunlight to flood the interiors, casting shadows that add depth and movement to the space. The use of earthy tones, soft fabrics, and natural materials creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. The living room is anchored by rich chestnut hues and curated artworks. Light filters through, revealing subtle textures and creating a dynamic interplay of shadow and form. The open-plan layout encourages social interaction, with music, art, and personal collections contributing to an atmosphere of creativity and comfort. In the study, a lattice-style wine cabinet divides the space, offering privacy without sacrificing openness. This cozy nook, perfect for quiet reading or contemplation, is bathed in natural light, reinforcing the home’s connection to the outdoors. The bedroom, with its soft, natural materials like cotton-linen, velvet, and washi paper, evokes a sense of retreat. The space feels like a vacation escape, designed for relaxation and reconnection with nature. The multipurpose room serves various functions—a guest suite, hobby room, or home theater. The uncluttered design leaves room for personal expression and creativity.

Fashion and Trend: A Bold Contrast

While the project embraces minimalism, WJ Studio introduces moments of boldness through color and custom furniture. These elements add energy and vibrancy, creating a dynamic contrast to the otherwise subdued palette. The dining area features a round, bean-green table and geometric blue artwork that create a striking visual balance, blending form and function. Custom-designed angular sofas and sculptural chairs make bold statements, reflecting modern design trends. The study’s sleek bookshelf showcases the homeowner’s collection of vinyl records, art pieces, and trendy toys, offering a glimpse into their personality. Rich, contrasting colors—red, green, black, and yellow—add warmth and depth in the master bedroom, creating a space that feels vibrant yet harmonious. The children’s room inspires creativity, with a playful mix of colors and interactive decor, making it both functional and fun.

Nature and Warmth

The project’s material palette is grounded in natural wood, soft whites, and warm textiles, creating a sense of coziness and connection to the environment. Every detail, from the cabinetry to the furnishings, reflects a commitment to simplicity and functionality. The entryway sets the tone with playful piano-key hooks that add a whimsical touch. The open kitchen and dining area feature clean lines and minimalist cabinetry, fostering a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere. A balcony adorned with greenery provides a peaceful retreat, perfect for enjoying tea and quiet moments. This sense of calm carries into the master bedroom, where soft bedding and warm lighting create a restful sanctuary. The children’s room embraces a jungle theme, with green accents and playful animal motifs fostering a sense of adventure and imagination.

Design Philosophy

The Greentown Cloud Mansion Model Room is a testament to WJ Studio’s belief that architecture should enhance everyday life. By integrating art, light, and natural materials, the design creates a home that feels both timeless and modern. It’s a space that not only looks beautiful but also functions as a sanctuary for its inhabitants, fostering a sense of peace and connection. For those seeking a home that balances aesthetic simplicity with functional design, this project offers a blueprint for modern living rooted in nature and art.
