A Modern Retreat That Connects Architecture and Landscape
MCZ House by NIU Arquitetura e Construção is a contemporary residence that redefines the relationship between architecture, landscape, and daily living. Located in Cristais Paulista, São Paulo, the 399-square-meter home stretches gracefully along a gently sloping site, embracing the horizon and surrounding greenery.
The concept revolves around openness and connection. Every space within the house — from the main living areas to the most private suites — was designed to engage directly with the outdoors. The project celebrates simplicity, functionality, and the warmth of natural materials while maintaining a sophisticated architectural language.
A Linear Composition That Frames the View
The house follows a linear plan that mirrors the topography of the site. By aligning its primary volume parallel to the street and slope, the architects achieved both privacy and panoramic exposure. The entrance façade presents a quiet, solid face to the neighborhood, while the opposite side opens completely to a lush garden and infinity-edge pool.
Large sliding glass doors create a seamless transition between the interior and exterior. When opened, the living room, kitchen, and outdoor terrace merge into one continuous social space. This fluidity enhances natural ventilation and allows residents to live in constant dialogue with the landscape.
The Warmth of Material Honesty
Materiality plays a central role in defining the character of MCZ House. The architects combined concrete, stone, wood, and ceramic to craft an atmosphere that feels both timeless and grounded. The tones are natural and earthy, harmonizing with the surrounding vegetation and light.
Wooden brise-soleil panels provide privacy and sun protection while softening the minimalist geometry of the architecture. Inside, the same material palette continues, creating visual continuity and tactile comfort. The overall aesthetic is one of balance — between rustic authenticity and contemporary refinement.
Light, Air, and Openness
Natural light was treated as an architectural material in its own right. Openings are strategically positioned to filter sunlight throughout the day, creating a dynamic play of shadow across the interiors. The roof’s generous eaves protect the glass façades from direct sun, allowing for year-round comfort without excessive mechanical cooling.
Cross-ventilation flows naturally through the linear plan, supported by wide corridors and open courtyards. The result is a house that breathes — cool, bright, and constantly connected to nature.
A Home Designed for Connection
MCZ House is not a home of excess but of intention. Each space was designed with purpose: the kitchen opens to the pool terrace for easy gatherings; the living room doubles as a viewing gallery for the sunset; the master suite enjoys an uninterrupted view of the horizon.
The outdoor areas are integral to daily life, offering places for contemplation, leisure, and family interaction. The swimming pool reflects the sky, extending the visual depth of the site and enhancing the sense of tranquility.

Through clarity of form and restraint in detail, NIU Arquitetura e Construção achieved a project that feels both sophisticated and deeply rooted in its place.
