Architecture Rebalanced by Ten Degrees
In the dense fabric of Jakarta, 10º House by STUDIE explores how a subtle geometric shift can radically transform spatial experience. The project’s defining gesture — a 10-degree rotation of the façade — reorients the home toward morning light and prevailing breezes, protecting it from harsh western sun and urban noise.
The result is a dwelling that feels open yet protected, bold yet calm — an urban retreat where structure and climate are in constant dialogue.
A Contextual Reinvention
Rather than demolishing the old house, STUDIE used the existing footprint as a framework for adaptive renewal. The design pares down all unnecessary layers, reducing the home to its essentials: structure, proportion, and light.
The new façade in board-formed concrete expresses gravity and permanence, while timber and glass provide warmth and permeability. This interplay between mass and transparency defines the architectural tone: timeless, tactile, and deeply attuned to its tropical setting.
The 10° Shift
The 10-degree tilt is both conceptual and functional. It fine-tunes sunlight penetration, enhances cross ventilation, and subtly frames new perspectives toward the street and garden. By rotating its face, the home achieves:

Natural ventilation corridors aligning with Jakarta’s southeast breezes.
This single move reorganizes the home’s entire spatial logic, demonstrating how minimal interventions can yield profound impact.
Light, Shadow, and Living
Inside, the home transitions from the monolithic exterior to a serene, luminous interior. Courtyards punctuate the plan, allowing air and light to flow freely across both levels. Living, dining, and kitchen zones merge seamlessly into one continuous social core, visually anchored by a polished concrete floor and timber ceiling panels that temper acoustics and warmth.
Sliding partitions allow the ground floor to open completely toward the garden, while the upper level — containing bedrooms and a small studio — maintains privacy through louvered timber screens. Throughout the day, sunlight traces across textured concrete and wood, giving the interiors a quiet dynamism.
Climate and Material
10º House operates as a passive tropical system. Deep roof overhangs, perforated shading, and double-height voids reduce thermal gain while encouraging airflow. The use of locally available materials — teak wood, concrete, and terracotta — minimizes environmental impact while connecting the house to regional craftsmanship.
Landscape designer Tanemind complements the architecture with native plantings that cool, filter, and green the outdoor spaces. The vegetation becomes part of the architecture, softening hard lines and reconnecting domestic life with the living landscape.
A Contemporary Tropical Minimalism
STUDIE’s approach to tropical minimalism balances precision with comfort. In 10º House, restraint becomes a form of generosity: fewer materials, fewer walls, more openness. The architecture achieves luxury not through excess, but through light, proportion, and atmosphere.
The house embodies the studio’s design philosophy — contemporary Indonesian architecture rooted in climate, context, and craft.
