Set within the calm rhythms of Huizhou, China, Poetic Garden by BDSD Boundless Design is a 330m² private club that gracefully dissolves the boundary between architecture and emotion. Conceived in May 2022 and completed in March 2024, the project weaves together spatial elegance, natural elements, and immersive product integration into a living, breathing design narrative.

More Than a Showroom

Commissioned by Shenhui Customization, Poetic Garden is not a conventional showroom—it is an experiential space. Designed to showcase whole-house customization in context, the project balances functionality, emotion, and art. The 150m² indoor space opens out into a 180m² landscaped garden, creating a continuous experience of architecture, nature, and tranquility.

Spatial Strategy: The Garden Path

BDSD draws inspiration from traditional Chinese garden paths, where mystery and rhythm lead the visitor forward. The layout features winding corridors, shifting perspectives, and carefully curated vignettes. Light filters through frosted glass and black metal grilles, while sculptures and plant compositions animate the journey.

Chief Designer Lin Wenke explains that the name “Poetic Garden” symbolizes not only the spatial form but also the emotional resonance of the space—evoking calm, imagination, and subtle luxury.

Emotional Design in a Post-Pandemic World

With post-COVID sensibilities in mind, Poetic Garden responds to the renewed desire for spaces of stillness and reflection. Semi-transparent partitions, shadow play, and layered lighting create a soft, slow atmosphere—an environment that invites visitors to pause, feel, and reconnect.

From the entrance vestibule to the central tearoom, the design uses dark materials, framed vistas, and tranquil furnishings to heighten the sensory experience.

Harmony of Art and Function

Throughout the space, art meets utility:

  • Dining Room: Dark tones enhance serenity.

  • Wine Tasting Area: Frosted glass and recessed lighting offer moody elegance.

  • Kitchen & Living Room: Minimalist layouts allow light and form to take center stage.

  • Tearoom: Inspired by Tanizaki’s “In Praise of Shadows,” it uses soft lighting and warm textures to amplify peace and poetry.

Mid-century modern furniture, low walls, and strategic illumination infuse the space with a timeless yet intimate character.

The Garden: Nature as Design Partner

Outside, the garden draws on the minimalist zen aesthetic of Ryoanji Temple. Curated with stone, sand, bamboo, moss, and pine, the composition offers not just beauty but symbolism—an invitation to explore the balance between nature and humanity.

This poetic landscape becomes a canvas for contemplation, framing nature as both a backdrop and a protagonist in daily life.

BDSD Boundless Design

Founded in 2019 by designers Lin Wenke and Sun Zhengyuan, BDSD Wujie Design is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Huizhou, located on the east coast of China's Greater Bay Area. The studio embodies the region’s pioneering spirit, delivering creative energy through a youthful, forward-thinking, and culturally sensitive design approach. BDSD Wujie Design provides comprehensive services including space strategy, interior design, aesthetic furnishing, architectural landscaping, lighting design, and material research. Their work spans residential, commercial, cultural, and public spaces. In addition to commissioned projects, the studio has launched several of its own cultural spaces, such as Jianjiancaotang (a tea space), Ueno Bookstore, and Pingkong Shuzao, a material research lab. Rooted in the essence of life, the studio focuses on creating emotional, livable environments that blend design with cultural exploration. Their approach integrates multiple design languages to reflect the poetry, simplicity, and authenticity of everyday experience. With an evolving body of work, BDSD Wujie Design continues to influence contemporary spatial aesthetics in China and beyond.
