In Fremantle’s historic West End, where heritage architecture meets evolving hospitality, Rezen Studio continues to shape Western Australia’s design landscape. Following the acclaimed transformation of the original Vin Populi restaurant, the firm introduces a charming sibling: Vin Populi Next Door—a moody, richly textured wine bar that reimagines the essence of Italian enotecas in a contemporary Australian setting.
A Darker, Intimate Interpretation
At just 50 square meters, Vin Populi Next Door is modest in size but immersive in experience. Conceived as an overflow venue and standalone bar, the space mirrors the original restaurant’s nostalgic tone but ventures into darker, moodier territory. Rezen Studio masterfully layers the interior with cork cladding, deep green marble, and aged finishes that echo a timeworn ambiance—inviting guests to indulge in a sense of escape.
The venue draws inspiration from traditional Italian wine bars, with cozy spatial planning and graphic wall elements that nod to the branding of both establishments. The subdued lighting and atmospheric palette provide a dramatic counterpoint to the brighter interiors of the main restaurant, establishing a distinct yet connected identity.
Materiality & Mood
What sets Vin Populi Next Door apart is its thoughtful material palette, which includes:
- Dark-stained cork lining the walls for a soft, cocooning effect
- Rich green marble countertops, evoking classic Italian design
- Graphic detailing and custom branding integrated seamlessly
- Subtle patina across fixtures to enhance a sense of lived-in luxury
The result is an immersive, textured space that balances modern hospitality trends with enduring character.
Seamless Extension, Independent Experience
Although conceived as an extension to the main Vin Populi dining room, Next Door is fully equipped to operate independently—functioning as a standalone wine bar, private dining venue, or casual drinks spot. This flexibility aligns with post-pandemic shifts in hospitality design, where small-footprint venues with a strong personality are increasingly in demand.
Design That Enhances the Brand
The continuity in branding, spatial rhythm, and materials between the two Vin Populi locations highlights Rezen Studio’s mastery in creating holistic design experiences. Rather than replicating the original, they offer a nuanced evolution—deepening the narrative while enhancing brand cohesion. The bold move to contrast light with dark, old with new, makes Next Door feel familiar yet thrillingly fresh.
