Designed by the acclaimed Thai firm WARchitect, The Recessed Residence is a remarkable example of a modern minimalist house in Bangkok. Located in Taling Chan, this 650 sq.m. private residence masterfully blends Muji-style minimalism with classic elegance, reflecting a sophisticated approach to contemporary Thai architecture.

A Unified Design for Two Generations

Originally, the owners envisioned building two separate homes on their expansive one-rai plot: a classic-style home for the parents and a minimalist retreat for their adult child. However, due to land restrictions caused by high-voltage power lines and the risk of visual disharmony between two contrasting styles, the architects proposed a single, unified structure with separate internal functions.

This solution brought both elegance and practicality, combining two lifestyles under one roof while maintaining distinct private zones.

Harmonizing Classic and Minimalist Styles

The architectural language of the house is defined by white recessed frames along the ceiling and walls. These recesses create striking shadows and subtle depth, emphasizing the minimalist design while echoing the timeless elegance of classical architecture. During the day, natural light interacts with the geometry, transforming the elevation throughout the hours. At night, concealed strip lighting adds a futuristic glow—ideal for evening gatherings in the adjacent garden.

The building runs east to west, optimizing natural ventilation and minimizing heat gain. The eastern façade, facing the street, is a solid wall—presenting a monolithic, museum-like appearance. In contrast, the western side opens up to a lush, undevelopable lawn, which now functions as the home’s welcoming front yard.

Functional Minimalism: One Large Room Concept

The younger resident’s side of the house follows a “one large room” concept. Multiple functions—entry hall, pantry, dining area, and lounge—are seamlessly connected through varying levels and recessed geometry. A floating staircase bridges vertical space through a stunning tree courtyard that doubles as a living art frame. Upstairs, a mezzanine workspace and an open bedroom complete the experience of integrated modern living.

Hidden Elegance in the Parent’s Wing

In contrast, the parent’s zone is characterized by a grand hall with a seemingly disconnected layout. However, behind the sleek white walls lie hidden revolving doors that offer access to private quarters. This subtle integration enhances privacy while maintaining visual continuity.
