Architecture Rooted in the Wyoming Landscape
The Butte Residence by CLB Architects is perched on a 38-acre site in Jackson, Wyoming, overlooking the confluence of the Snake and Gros Ventre Rivers. Completed in 2012, the residence commands sweeping views of the Teton Mountain Range and nearby National Parks, while seamlessly integrating into the contours of the butte.
The design challenge was to craft a home that embraced the site’s dramatic vistas without dominating the skyline. The solution: a series of sculptural volumes and curving roof forms that echo the soft profile of the butte, allowing the architecture to both emerge from and return to the land.
Program and Layout
The project consists of a 7,600-square-foot main residence and a 700-square-foot artist studio, organized as a sequence of volumes that range across the site. This composition allows for a diversity of experiences:
-
Sweeping panoramas from the public living spaces.
-
Secluded retreats nestled into the wooded areas of the property.
-
Outdoor terraces and canopies providing shelter and comfort in Wyoming’s shifting climate.
The rooflines, gently springing from the topography, create protective overhangs and shaded canopies, extending the home’s livability into the landscape.
Materiality and Design Language
Material choices reflect both Western tradition and a modernist sensibility. Locally inspired stonework and warm cedar are paired with zinc roofing and expansive glazing, reinforcing the balance between rugged natural context and refined contemporary living.
The interiors are light-filled, minimal, and art-focused, designed for an owner who is also a collector of contemporary art and sculpture. Clean lines and open floor plans provide a neutral yet elegant backdrop, while curated views frame Wyoming’s wilderness as living art.
A Home for Living and Creating
The inclusion of a dedicated artist studio further anchors the project in creativity and reflection. Positioned to capture natural light and expansive views, the studio functions as both a workspace and a retreat, reinforcing the home’s dual role as a residence and cultural sanctuary.
A Contemporary Icon in Jackson Hole
With its organic roof forms, natural material palette, and site-sensitive design, the Butte Residence embodies Carney Logan Burke Architects’ signature approach: modern architecture deeply rooted in place. The home offers its residents not just shelter, but a powerful connection to the sweeping landscapes of Wyoming.
As a residence that blurs art, architecture, and nature, the Butte Residence stands as a contemporary icon in Jackson Hole — a retreat where the rugged West meets refined modern living.
