A Contemporary Rural Retreat
The Shelter in the Vineyard is a striking modern cottage designed by Ramón Esteve, located on the outskirts of Fontanars dels Alforins in Spain. Surrounded by vast vineyards and pine forests, the residence seamlessly integrates into its natural environment, blurring the line between architecture and landscape.
Developed as a second home, the project is conceived as both refuge and observatory, where residents can reconnect with the serenity of nature while enjoying the comforts of a contemporary dwelling.
Generating Form from Tradition
The inspiration stems from the traditional gable-roofed rural houses of the region. Ramón Esteve reinterprets this archetype into a minimalist, modern composition: a long white concrete shell intersected by pinewood boxes. This geometric extrusion defines the envelope of the house, within which the program unfolds in a single story.
Two monolithic volumes—one of smooth white concrete, the other of pine—compose the building. The wooden boxes, arranged transversely, punctuate the central volume and house the more private functions, while also framing views toward the forest and vineyards.
Environment and Landscape
The house is approached along a path shaded by olive trees, where it emerges discreetly among cypresses, poplars, and pines. Concealed within vegetation, the home establishes a subtle presence in the landscape rather than dominating it.
At the heart of the plan lies a generous central space with a large chimney, serving as the social core of the residence. From here, all rooms branch outward into the wooden boxes and covered porches. When uninhabited, the house can be fully closed, ensuring both privacy and protection.
Spatial Composition
The shelter’s plan is defined by fluid circulation and framed views. A large porch at one end extends the house outward, offering dual perspectives: one toward the dense pine forest, the other across the open vineyards.
Every detail, from pinewood furniture to bespoke carpentry, follows a strict 20cm modular system, aligning with the rhythm of the concrete formwork. This consistency in proportion and materiality reinforces the home’s minimalist clarity.
Sustainability and Passive Design
Shelter in the Vineyard was designed following the principles of a passive house, integrating green technologies to reduce energy consumption. The home is equipped with:
-
Solar panels for renewable energy collection
-
Biomass systems for heating and power
-
Rainwater harvesting for sustainable storage and use
Thermal insulation using rock wool ensures energy efficiency, while smart lighting systems optimize natural daylight. Together, these strategies enhance comfort while reducing environmental impact.
A Personalized Architectural Statement
Every element of the interior—from faucets and chimney to lighting switches—was custom-designed specifically for this project. This meticulous level of detail ensures a cohesive architectural language where structure, materials, furniture, and technology are seamlessly integrated.
