Tucked into a compact urban lot in East Austin, the E2211 House by RAVEL Architecture is a bold yet refined example of how thoughtful design can maximize livability, light, and connection to nature within a limited footprint. At 2,179 square feet, the residence balances sleek materials and spatial openness to create a home that feels far larger than its numbers suggest.
Design Strategy: Form, Function, and Flow
The design places the home toward the rear of the site, creating a private north-facing entry garden that establishes an immediate sense of seclusion and intimacy. A poured-in-place concrete wall defines the boundary with sculptural presence, offering both privacy and material contrast to the rest of the home’s clean, minimalist exterior.
Inside, the layout is smart and efficient, with an emphasis on natural light, visual connection, and warmth.

Light-Filled Interiors and Crafted Detailing
At the core of the home is a double-height dining area, illuminated by expansive glazing that opens directly to the courtyard—blurring the line between indoor and outdoor living. This connection is enhanced by a southern clerestory window that channels sunlight deep into the interior, balancing light throughout the year.

The semi-connected kitchen includes built-in appliances and custom cabinetry, ideal for both entertaining and quiet conversation.

A ground-floor primary suite opens to the outdoors and features a combined bathroom-closet, offering privacy and spatial efficiency.

Upstairs, a cozy den overlooks the dining space and garden, maintaining vertical visual connection while offering a distinct retreat.
Material Palette: Refined and Regional
Throughout the home, hand-made rift-sawn white oak cabinetry adds texture and warmth, offering contrast to the cool tones of concrete, glass, and plaster. This blend of industrial durability and artisanal detail creates a home that is visually calm yet richly layered.
The E2211 House by RAVEL Architecture is a study in precision and restraint, proving that elegant modern living doesn’t require excess—just intentional design, regional awareness, and crafted execution.
