Designed by Feldman Architecture, Rau Haus is a serene, modern retreat nestled in the rolling hills of Portola Valley, California. The 3,433-square-foot residence responds to its site with a low-impact, eco-conscious design that captures panoramic views of the Coal Creek Open Space Preserve and distant glimpses of the San Francisco Bay.
This L-shaped residence was envisioned as a family’s escape from urban density. The clients, a couple with a young daughter, sought a peaceful sanctuary that offers both seclusion and space to host friends and extended family. Feldman Architecture delivered a sculptural, light-filled dwelling that blurs the line between indoors and out.
Architecture in Harmony with the Landscape
The house’s design gracefully tucks into the eastern hillside, forming intimate outdoor courtyards and framing unobstructed views from nearly every angle. The architecture is articulated to minimize visual disruption from adjacent lots while maximizing the immersive experience of the natural surroundings.
A double-height volume defines the kitchen and dining area, establishing vertical connections to a loft study and upper-level bedrooms. Clerestory windows and light wells usher in morning sun, while ensuring privacy and maintaining a close dialogue with nature.
The perpendicular wing, a single-story mass topped with a green roof, offers a multipurpose space adjacent to the pool terrace—ideal for exercise, play, and entertaining. A sleek infinity pool dissolves the line between cultivated landscape and native meadow, reinforcing the architectural emphasis on seamless transitions.
Interior and Material Strategy
The material palette is defined by restraint and durability. The second floor is clad in cement plaster, while the ground level showcases locally salvaged Monterey Cypress siding, left untreated to age naturally. These elements are stacked in clean geometries, flowing from exterior to interior, maintaining a cohesive and understated modern aesthetic.
Inside, finishes are minimalist, allowing architectural form and surrounding nature to take center stage. From the public roof deck, visitors can soak in the rare northern views toward the Bay—an important feature for the homeowners, who wanted shared access without compromising the privacy of their primary suite.
Sustainable Living by Design
Rau Haus is engineered to perform as beautifully as it looks. The home incorporates an array of sustainable technologies, including:
-
A 6.24kW photovoltaic system generating 9,777 kWh/year
-
Two Heliodyne solar panels feeding a 119-gallon storage tank
-
All-electric appliances and a heat-pump HVAC system
-
Passive solar strategies, including deep overhangs and inset windows
-
Cross-ventilation via operable windows, skylights, and doors
-
Concrete with 30% fly ash to lower embodied carbon
Additionally, outdoor patios offer varying degrees of shade throughout the day, enhancing year-round usability and comfort.
Architectural Intent
“This project allowed us to craft a space of serenity, well-balanced with a design that creates horizontal and vertical connections within and toward the landscape,” said Steven Stept, AIA, Project Principal.
“Beneath the quiet design sensibility is a rigorous articulation of forms and spaces, precisely detailed within a tightly curated material palette,” added Anjali Iyer, LEED AP, Project Architect. “The house embraces the spirit of the site and sets the stage for daily life to unfold.”
Rau Haus stands as a refined example of sustainable residential architecture, where material, form, and environment are seamlessly integrated—one of many sophisticated works by Feldman Architecture.
