A Refined Sanctuary in the Austrian Alps
Nestled in the snow-covered village of Hinterglemm, Austria, Hotel Wiesergut by Gogl Architekten is a stunning example of minimalist luxury, completed in 2012. This boutique alpine hotel reimagines a traditional four-story family estate through the lens of modern architecture, while staying deeply rooted in its local heritage.
Design Philosophy: Complex Simplicity
Gogl Architekten approached the project with a guiding concept of “complex simplicity”, aiming to express purity and harmony through architectural restraint. The transformation of the existing structure involved merging natural materials—local stone, warm timber, blackened steel, and raw concrete—with contemporary forms that blur the boundary between indoors and the surrounding alpine landscape.
From the handcrafted furnishings to the exposed concrete detailing, every element is designed to evoke a tactile connection with nature. Expansive glazing brings in soft mountain light, allowing the alpine surroundings to become part of the interior experience.
Suites: Minimalism Meets Warmth
The hotel features 17 manor suites and 7 exclusive garden suites, each offering serene, light-filled interiors curated with bespoke furniture by Austrian artisans. The garden suites, in particular, boast private atriums with open fireplaces and freestanding bathtubs—combining rustic charm with modern indulgence.
Craft, Cuisine, and Comfort
Hotel Wiesergut maintains the Kröll family’s farm-to-table tradition with a gourmet restaurant that sources ingredients from its own herb garden and nearby organic farms. The culinary experience bridges innovation with authenticity, mirroring the architectural vision.
A wellness area, complete with a spa, indoor pool, and meditative spaces, enhances the holistic retreat character of the hotel.
Architecture That Honors Place
What sets Hotel Wiesergut apart is its uncompromising connection to place. Rather than impose a new identity, Gogl Architekten amplified the soul of the existing estate. The restrained color palette, textural contrasts, and site-sensitive layout respect the rhythms of the alpine environment—delivering a hospitality experience that is as much about retreat as it is about revelation.
