HD Haus by Bernardo Bader Architekten

The HD Haus is a stunning contemporary home designed by Bernardo Bader Architekten. It is located in the beautiful hills above the village of Schwarzach in Austria. The home is gifted with spectacular views of the surrounding landscapes, similarly to this studio’s other design featured on our site Haus am Moor.

A young client inherited a small plot above the village of Schwarzach, at the foot of Linzenberg. She desired a house tailored to the special site, distinct from the common minimalist box-style houses. The structure is an attempt to house the programme for a one-family-home as compact as possible and to establish a firm end to the narrow hillside road leading towards the building.

The house is organized on two levels. The upper is the entrance level consisting of a sole room for cooking I eating I living. Each of these areas is oriented to another direction. Hence morning cooking sessions face east, the lunch outdoor sheltered area faces south and the living area is oriented towards the rich atmosphere of the west. The lower level consists of sleeping rooms, bathroom and a small basement.

The building layout is dominated by the concept of inner core and protective shell. Out of the massive foundation white panelled walls grow up to the ceiling, building the core. The sloped roof extends the differentiation of space. Upwards and outwards a homogenous outer shell of white fir boards expands a protective shield over the inner life of the house. It is only a matter of time until through natural weathering the wood coated house will become a part of its environment.
