Set on a serene 2,000 m² site overlooking the Canal Arias river in the suburbs of Buenos Aires, Argentina, the Agua House by Barrionuevo Sierchuk Arquitectas is a luminous, water-embraced residence designed for peaceful living. With a built area of 450 m² (4,840 sq ft), the home is a poetic expression of light, stone, and reflection—aptly named after the Spanish word for water.
A River-Oriented Design Philosophy
Facing northeast and surrounded by lush landscape, Agua House is designed for a couple seeking spacious, fluid interiors and a strong relationship with the outdoors. The ground floor houses expansive reception areas, made flexible by large sliding wooden doors that retract into the walls, allowing the space to open or close depending on the moment.
On the first floor, a master bedroom suite and guest bedroom offer private retreat, elevated above the open social volumes below.
Stone, Water, and Light as Structural Themes
At the core of Agua House’s material language are two Laja Neuquén stone walls that cut through the home, guiding the architectural flow and defining zones both functionally and aesthetically. Their rich, earthy texture inspired the entire color palette of the residence.
Water becomes the house’s visual and experiential foundation:
-
A large swimming pool stretches across the property, reinforcing horizontal lines.
-
Linear ponds encircle the house, providing reflection, movement, and meditative ambiance.
The building’s expansive glass façades invite the landscape to enter the home, while the ever-changing daylight transforms interiors throughout the day, giving the house a sense of dynamism and softness.
Interior Atmosphere: Minimalism with Warmth
The interplay between stone, wood, water, and glass defines the house’s minimalist yet warm ambiance. The architecture celebrates simplicity without sterility, framing the surrounding greenery and waterways like living artworks. Every detail—materials, proportions, transitions—is rooted in natural rhythm and elemental balance.
Conclusion: A Home Where Nature and Architecture Flow as One
Agua House by Barrionuevo Sierchuk Arquitectas is a celebration of elemental design—where stone defines structure, water shapes experience, and light animates space. It stands as a tranquil, modern retreat that not only respects its environment but becomes a part of it.
From its riverside orientation to its immersive material palette, Agua House is more than a residence—it is a living composition of landscape, architecture, and serenity.
